Therapeutic Laser

What is Laser therapy?

Therapeutic laser, also called low level laser or cold laser, is the use of a focused beam of light at a specific wavelength that is delivered to the patient by a probe held by the rehab therapist.  The main effects of laser therapy come from a process called photobiomodulation.  The laser light causes physiologic changes in the part of the patient that’s being treated.  These changes may reduce pain, improve blood flow, promote nerve regeneration, help repair injury to cartilage, and limit the development of fibrosis (scar tissue).  Laser therapy may be beneficial for neck and back pain, joint pain/arthritis, tendinitis, muscle pain/spasm, and in helping patients regain function after spinal cord injury.

What can you expect?

When used properly, laser therapy is safe and comfortable for the patient.  Pets may feel mild warmth or nothing at all.  Dark goggles are worn to protect the eyes.  Treatment takes only a few minutes for each location treated.

Where is laser therapy available?

Laser treatment is available in two locations in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and is provided either by Dr. Leavitt or by a trained veterinary rehabilitation technician.  Both locations have class IV lasers which are the most powerful of the therapeutic lasers.
